Cresheim Trail
What a great first work day of the year! Fifteen v What a great first work day of the year! Fifteen volunteers came out for a variety of tasks this morning: armoring the stone bridge near the boardwalk, weed whacking the newly cut portion of trail, cross hatching the new boards under the Chestnut Hill West train bridge, closing a muddy swampy section of trail and more. Thanks to all who came out, including some crew leaders from @fowissahickon and families from @somontmtb @independenceyouthcycling @phillywissmtb

Lots of good things happening on the Cresheim Trail, let's keep the momentum going. We have volunteer workdays on the third Saturday of every month, so plan ahead and come out to join us!

Reminder: Friends of the Cresheim Trail’s first Reminder: Friends of the Cresheim Trail’s first volunteer workday of 2023 will happen TOMORROW - Saturday, January 21st at 9am. We’ll meet at our usual spot along Cresheim Valley Drive opposite Navajo Street — hiking and biking there is encouraged, and if you drive, you can find parking along CV Drive (park side — please use extra caution if you’re crossing the drive on foot) or on Germantown Avenue, a 3-5 minute walk away.

We’ll be checking out the newly cut section (thanks @philaparkandrec!), we’ll close a muddy old section as part of our floodplain restoration near the boardwalk, and we’ll get to some other general trail improvements as we can. Hope to see you there!

Next weekend, join the Friends of the Cresheim Tra Next weekend, join the Friends of the Cresheim Trail for our first workday of 2023. Saturday, January 21st at 9am, we'll meet along Cresheim Valley Drive opposite the intersection with Navajo Street. We'll be working on closing a muddy trail as part of our floodplain/wetland restoration effort. We'll also be working on English Ivy removal and trimming the recently cleared path along the railroad grade to Germantown Avenue. If the ground is soft enough, we'll repair some stone steps that were built about a century ago and do some minor trail maintenance.

New year, new Cresheim Trail? Kinda! With generous New year, new Cresheim Trail? Kinda! With generous help from @philaparkandrec last week, we took a brush hog to mow a path through the vegetation on the old railroad right-of-way from the upper loop closest to New Covenant Campus over to the bridge at Germantown Avenue. The bridge itself is a work in progress, a complicated one at that, but one we're keen on seeing happen soon. (More on this to come.) This is the first section of rail trail to be fitted out — a rail trail which will ultimately go to Fort Washington State Park as part of @thecircuittrails network. It's only an out-and-back for now, but it's a nice first step and a glimpse into the future. Thick soles (or tires) recommended.

A most solid volunteer workday on the Cresheim Tra A most solid volunteer workday on the Cresheim Trail this morning. Seven volunteers came out to work on several projects: fixing the trail where the tree fell on Cresheim Road yesterday (you can see Comcast vans in a couple pics - they were repairing cable wires); stabilizing the log jump on the zigzag part of the inner loop; cutting english ivy and privet; and repairing two deteriorated sections of the log ride, replacing them with new logs. Check the last two slides for a before-and-after.

A big hand to all who came out! 👏👏

As always, please use caution when using log rides and jumps and be mindful of other trail users. Thank you.

PSA: A large tree has fallen near the Cresheim Tra PSA: A large tree has fallen near the Cresheim Trail crossing of Cresheim Road. @pecoconnect has been out all day clearing the tree from the road and making repair to wires, but the tree took a good hunk of the trail with it, being extra soft from the rain of the last 24 hours. Tomorrow's workday is on and we'll cut a workaround there (among other tasks), so please use caution when passing through here. We'll now meet here, on Cresheim Road where the trail crosses (between Allens Lane and Cresheim Valley Drive), 9am.

Stairway to Saturday? Our final workday of 2022 wi Stairway to Saturday? Our final workday of 2022 will be this weekend, as we get into winter mode and look to the year ahead. Join us at 9am Saturday (12/17) on Cresheim Valley Drive opposite Navajo Street. There's parking along CVD, and it's less than a 5 minute walk from the Germantown Avenue trailhead.

Four dudes, some tools, a little Tetris, and over Four dudes, some tools, a little Tetris, and over 20 trees. That's what this morning's chilly volunteer workday looked like on the Cresheim Trail, as John, Dan, Nick & Brad rebuilt one of the boardwalk's "on ramps" and planted 20 native trees (with a few more to go) as part of the #LoveYourPark fall service. Thank you to @myphillypark and @philaparkandrec for organizing and for the trees; thank you @fowissahickon for loaning us shovels and buckets. Pics here are in reverse order from finished product to prior conditions.
